Let an Accurate Diagnosis Lead to an Accurate Prescription
It's a question I field on nearly a daily basis; "I saw this new drill on/in/from The Golf Channel/Golf Digest/a golfing buddy – what do you think?" My response is typically to compare working on the root cause of the golf swing to working on the root cause of a physical ailment. For example, if you went to your doctor and told him/her that you read about how great a new type of prescription drug was, he/she would likely explain that when applied in the right way, to the right person, to address the right root cause, it can be an effective treatment.
The root-cause issues in the golf swing are really no different to a physical ailment requiring a proper diagnosis in order to get to a proper treatment plan. Finding a knowledgeable instructor that can explain the cause-and-effect relationship in your swing is the first step to making significant improvements to your game, but is often the most overlooked step in becoming a better player.

So, the next time a friend or TV personality readily lets you in on the biggest "secret move" since the last biggest one, be sure to hit the mute button (either the one on your remote or in your head) and pick up the phone book – it just may lead to long-term success with your game.
